And you thought surfing involved water! It doesnt matter what you want to do, you will find that there
will usually be some links to the Internet. We are now in an age where
you can shop, learn, bank, order pizza and even chat to your Aunt Gertrude
in Australia through the Internet. But what can it do to help you with
your future? |
We certainly are! You can now get access to lots of careers information over the web whether it be job searching, higher education, or information on local college courses. You might want some help with your options, or find out about your local Careers / Connexions service and Careers / Connexions conventions. Things are changing very quickly, you can order a university prospectus or have a look at what their campus looks like, or you can find out information about jobs and link to other relevant sites which may have recruitment pages. Some companies are even requesting application forms over the web and advertising many of their jobs on line. So it is important that YOU are ahead of the game and aware of good careers information sites.
There are lots of different ways to search for sites. Over the following months we will be giving you some tips for successful searching, so watch this space. If you want to remember a good site or remind yourself to keep visiting it, you can add it to your favourites or bookmarks. You can do this by clicking the favourites or bookmarks icon and select add to favourites / bookmarks. The website address will then be stored in this section.
It is difficult to keep track of the best and most useful sites or even find them in the first place! You can use a search engine like google or alta vista to look for specific information like the recruitment pages of your local supermarket or you can use Gateway Sites. These sites are designed to help you find good information in different subject areas. Like this site it has many links to websites that you can access without having to know the website address. Just click on the site you want and it links directly. Have a look at the links on this site and see what you can find. Also check your local careers service site and see if they have a useful links page.
No problem, just go to a search engine and type in the name of a record label for example "Virgin Records" and the search results should bring up direct links to their site. Check out their recruitment or employment pages and see what information they have for jobs available, work experience opportunities or maybe a contact name for further information.
The secret is to think very carefully about what information you want and where you might be able to get it from before you start searching. This will reduce the amount of completely irrelevant sites the results list might find. Using speech marks around your keywords may also help you search for specific information. If you wanted to look for information on Higher Education Conventions and you didnt use the speech marks, the search engine would look for websites containing those words individually and you might find that the results list offers links to carpet conventions' or educational office supplies. So remember, when searching use good key words and you should get good search results back.
Find out where you can get access to the Internet, either at home, school, in your careers library or local library, log on and surf out! Make sure that you use these sites to your advantage and find out whats out there for YOU!
Happy Surfing!
