Unconventional Careers

What jobs are out there?

Off the top of your head, what jobs come to mind?  Accountant, cleaner, retail assistant, police officer, secretary or maybe a mechanic!  All of these are perfectly good jobs and might be just what you want to do in the future.  However, there are loads of jobs out there that I didn’t even know existed!

What does work mean to you?

As you read this article, think about what the idea of ‘work’ means to you.

Does it mean - A :-

Or does it mean - B :-

Well, what did you think?

If you agreed with A, then you need to think very hard about why you feel that way.  There’s nothing wrong with where you choose to work, but you must think about the reasons why you chose that particular career.  If you think you would choose a job / career because it’s near to where you live, because your mates are doing it or because it was the first job you could get, maybe you need to talk to a Connexions / Careers Adviser in your school / college or local centre.  You have lots of options available to you.

If you agreed with B, then you are on the right track!

Money, location, hours etc. are all important factors when looking at your career options but there are hundreds of jobs that you could still do that are creative, imaginative or better suited to your personality.  You may think that some of these are a bit out of the ordinary, but you never know..........you might like it!

Here are a few examples :-

Band Roadie

If you don’t fancy your chances at being the next member of U2 or Destiny’s Child but you like the idea of the pop world and don’t mind lifting heavy equipment etc.  This could be the job for you.  Earnings start from nothing to £50 per day (basic pay) and could go up to £450 to £700 per week.

  • Chicken Sexer

If you fancy checking out whether a chick is a girl or a boy (and believe me it’s more complicated than it sounds) you can earn from £12,500 per year or between £20-£30 per hour freelance.

    Embalmer

You need to be aged 17 or over to do this job and you can earn between £15-16,000 or £15 to £50 per case.  This does involve working with corpses and preserving them until the burial or cremation.  Not for the faint hearted and would suit someone interested in medical or scientific careers.

  • Tattoo Artist

You obviously need to be artistic and have steady hands (as making a mistake could be serious!)  Sessions are priced at between £35 to £60 (in London) per hour.

  • Stunt Performer

If the idea of driving a car through a building that is on fire whilst throwing yourself out of the car and leaping off a cliff.......safely, does not scare you, then this could be the job for you.  You will need acting ability and membership of equity, martial arts qualifications and loads of activity skills.  You can earn around £300 per day to £1200 per week.

  • These jobs are just a few of many that you could look into.  The basic message is that there might be your dream job just around the corner that you didn’t even know existed.  Remember, 10 years ago, who’d have though that you could have a job as a web designer that didn’t involve spending hours in the bathroom looking for spiders?  Whether you want to be a DJ or a nursing assistant, it doesn’t matter as long as you’ve thought about choosing a career that suits you.  Don’t just take people’s word for it......have a look for yourself and if you find an unconventional career that interests you, talk to your Connexions / Careers Adviser / Tutor / parents for more information.
