Money makes the world go round!!!

Or so they say! Whether you see yourself being a Wall Street tycoon with a "buy, buy, sell, sell" attitude or you're at peace with nature and "don't need possessions,…dude!". Money will still have an effect on your life. Sometimes, money can seem quite straightforward. Some have a lot and some have a little and you will need to think about how money fits in to your career choices. The main thing to consider is that earning it is one thing….but what you do with it can really count! This article is an introduction to the theme of money and finance and aims to point out lots of other things linked with money, that we will be looking at in more detail for future articles!

Show me the MONEY!

So you've got some money! Lucky old you! But what do you do with it? How did you get it? Even now, the majority of employers pay your salary directly in to your bank account. Do you have one? Do you know how to get one and choose one? How do you get the money out of your bank? Have you got cash cards, Switch/Delta/Visa/Mastercard and so on and so on? If you are old enough, do you understand what is involved with credit agreements and smallprint? Do you know how to manage or budget your money? Are you struggling with debt and need some help? Do you have a clue what all of the tax and national insurance information on your payslip means? Some of these questions may already be affecting you and as Granny always says "money doesn't grow on trees, dear!". You need to be switched on to these issues to protect your money and financial situation. You might be surprised about how much a poor credit rating can affect other areas of your life!

Earning and Learning!

You may also need to know about your options for financial support whilst you're learning. Have you heard of the Educational Maintenance Scheme developments? Will this affect you? Are you aware of sponsorship, grants or support funds available and could they be of help to you? Even as a student there are lots of money issues to consider. There are grants, loans and maybe the first time that you have ever had to think about finding money for food, rent and bills! Don't go steaming into your student life without being prepared with how to look after yourself…otherwise you might not experience student life for as long as you'd hoped and end up moping your way back to mum and dad's spare room!

Money and Employment

Wages are important. If you have a job or part time job already, you'll know how nice they are to receive at the end of the week or month! So when it comes to finding a job, make sure that you know you're money rights! Could you tell me what the minimum wage is? Do you know where to find out about it? If you are not employed, are you aware of your benefits? How will you access financial support and where will you get the information you need?

Money, Money, Money!

So in future articles we will be looking at some of these money issues in more detail. The most important thing for you to remember is that you need to know what you are doing with it and be aware of how much it can be involved with your life. There is lots of information available through your Connexions Adviser and look out for future articles to help you make sure that you're sorted when it comes to money issues!
